Moving Sucks

I now understand why people never move. My gypsy soul could never comprehend it before. The world is out there. Our options are limitless. Why would anyone stay home???? That was before I had my first move WITH furniture. Despite living and working in a number of countries, I did it under that rather spoiled umbrella of English teacher. This comes with any number of unlimited perks. Including apartments provided, or at the very least found for you, and (in my case anyway), they come furnished. What few things you add are usually not worth taking. So my previous moves involved packing a box with assorted pottery (or an occasion asking a most awesome ex to do so) and shipping it off to Canada. Pack my clothes and there done. Wheeeee. So since I was arriving with all my clothes packed, and Patrick had taken care of packing the clothes I had left behind, I was thinking this moving thing was going to be a snap.

I was oh so wrong.

2 days. 2 DAYS. And Im talking 2 full days. Days that involve accidents. The accident I will tell you in the next post. Be patient. I need something to appease the anti paid post people. :P

Anyway we wake up in the old apartment on Monday morning, eat the breakfast of champions (and my soul desire and only reason as a child to become an adult) of cake. Yum left over creamy confirmation cake.1 Then our helpers arrived. Patrick’s cousins. Poor foos had no idea what was in store. I had no idea what was in store. I am still shivering from the effects of it all. 2 rooms, only 2 rooms! My stuff already packed. We worked constantly, stopped only for a quick meal at Oma’s where they then did the changing of the plants and I tried to do my internet work, before we went right back at it. 11 at night we finally finished, and there was still our wardrobe and 2 chests to go back for. Plus the new apartment is stil not actually set up. Its an explosion of stuff in there.

So my new policy is to only buy old furniture. If we cant walk away from it I don’t want it. I want to know I can leave on a moments notice. I need a headquarters or I need cheap furniture for all! And anyone who wants to make fun of my apartment can make fun over my postcards from all the places I visit instead of wasting money on stuff. :P

1 The confirmation is worth a whole other post. A whole day of food and beer at a hotel. I don’t need a job, I just to wander around finding people willing to confirm me and more importantly, hold celebrations for it. I’ll be fed and with enough cash pocketed to live very comfortably thank you! It beat the crap out of ours where we went to the church basement to eat cookies and sandwiches. The sandwiches which I always refused to eat on principle. Give me sunshine, gardens and champagne any day thank you.

I should resurrect one of my old posts from last year for you, in which I tried to guess what the world would be like if nomads rather than farmers had dictated our social priorities.

In my dreamland, every apartment would come furnished and homeownership wouldn’t be the be all end all of achievement.
